Odds Formats

The three main ways odds are displayed — Decimal, Fractional, and American (Moneyline).

Odds formats are the different notations used to express the likelihood of an outcome and the potential payout of a bet. The three most widely used formats are Decimal, Fractional, and American. All three convey the same underlying information — the implied probability and the payout ratio — but they present it in different ways. Understanding how to read and convert between these formats is a foundational skill for any sports bettor.

Decimal odds are popular in Europe, Australia, and Canada. They represent the total return per dollar wagered, including the original stake. An odds value of 2.50 means a $1 bet returns $2.50 total ($1.50 profit plus the $1 stake).

Fractional odds are traditional in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Expressed as a fraction such as 3/2, they show the profit relative to the stake. A bet of $2 at 3/2 returns $3 in profit plus the $2 stake.

American odds are standard in the United States. Positive numbers (such as +150) indicate the profit from a $100 stake. Negative numbers (such as -200) indicate how much you must stake to earn $100 in profit.

Example

Consider an outcome with an implied probability of 40%. In each format, the odds would be approximately:

  • Decimal: 2.50 — A $100 bet returns $250 total ($150 profit).
  • Fractional: 3/2 — A $100 bet returns $150 profit.
  • American: +150 — A $100 bet returns $150 profit.

All three expressions represent the same payout. The conversion formulas are straightforward: Decimal = (Fractional numerator / denominator) + 1, and American positive odds divided by 100 equals the fractional value.

Key Points

  • Same information, different presentation: No format is inherently better than another. Each conveys identical payout and probability information, just in a different notation.
  • Decimal is the simplest for calculating returns: Multiply your stake by the decimal odds to get your total payout. This makes it the easiest format for quick mental math.
  • American odds distinguish favorites and underdogs at a glance: Negative values denote favorites and positive values denote underdogs, making it immediately clear which side the market favors.
  • Most sportsbooks let you choose: Nearly all online betting sites allow you to switch between odds formats in your account settings, so you can use whichever you find most intuitive.
